Presidential Elections

As we gear up for an election that might actually live up to the quadrennial hype of being the most consequential of our lifetimes, we'd like to review the last ten contests as they were pictured by Inx artists. Ronald Reagan's ascendancy marked the beginning of the 40-year-long Cold War against the American Liberalism born of the New Deal which may now be reaching Hot status. His brand of retrograde conservatism roused and outraged political cartoonists and helped spark the formation of Inx in 1980.

So we begin with Randy Jones' media star dreaming of military glory in 1980 and will end with whatever images we produce based on the outcome on November 3rd (or, soon thereafter, we hope.) You'll note several Jones cartoons here because he's our go-to guy as one of the finest caricaturists ever and because he has stuck by Inx longer than anyone. Included are two images of Bill Clinton from the 1990s by our recently-deceased and much-missed colleagues Igor Kopelnitsky and Horacio Cardo.

RBG & Female Justices

I note the passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg with regret –– she earned our deep admiration, and even affection, during her 27 years on the Supreme Court bench. Of course, some of her most important contributions to the law, especially concerning gender discrimination, date back to the 1970s when she cofounded the Women's Rights Project at the ACLU. Upon her death I was surprised to see how infrequently I'd drawn her –– most of my legal cartoons were nasty swipes at many of her typically male adversaries.

I asked Randy Jones if he had any ripe images and he dug up the beauty above from last year's Inner Circle program (more on that
here) which depicted the indefatigable RBG and one of her less-than-admirable successors. One of the sadder aspects of her leaving us and the Court now is that it has set in motion an already ugly scramble to replace her with an ideologically opposed judge. Randy gives us another take on RBG in this week's package and this time her unworthy opponent is female, ultra-conservative Amy Coney Barrett.

The whole process has become increasingly fractious as the lines between the Executive, Legislative and Judicial branches blur and threaten to disappear. Here are a couple of Inx drawings by myself and Tom Hachtman of the last two women who had to run the confirmation gauntlet, Elena Kagan and Sonia Sotomayor. The INX Redesign

The Redesign

In 1980, a group of Op-ed artists got together to form INX, a creative collective bound together by a passion for producing the most powerful political illustration with the least editorial interference. Week after week they created and self-syndicated a package of topical art and distributed it to a wide variety of newspapers looking for access to elite work at reasonable prices. The service was picked up by United Feature Syndicate in 1983, and was sold and distributed by them until 2002.

In that year, INX returned to selling its own wares, but this time online. We’d like to think the work has only gotten better overtime, ‘inspired’ by the dire state of our public affairs –– the dizzying news cycle now has us offering six new images per week for art directors and editors to choose from –– but the site itself has been in need of a reboot for some time. The original design could no longer meet current web standards requiring better distribution, salability and scalability. Tom Kerr, a long-time contributor and our invaluable webmeister, has pulled together this smart and shiny new design which will definitely make viewing, searching, downloading and paying for our work much, much easier.

So take a look around, give the tires a kick and contact us below with any suggestions or concerns. Please check this new blog regularly as we report and comment on the world of political cartooning and the work of our contributors.

And return every Wednesday for our latest offerings.
